The First Ship

Contact number one, which became the oil tanker J.M. Guffey, was begun on November 29, 1900.  Launched only six months later, the 310-foot ship was delivered on June 2, 1902.  She saw twenty-five years of service under the American flag, and then another decade as the Italian Meloria.
