The 1930’s were years of substantial and quickly-proven contribution in vitally needed tonnage to both Merchant Marine and Navy. The Chester was first of six cruisers completed for the Navy, followed by the Indianapolis, Tuscaloosa, Savannah, Nashville, and Phoenix. All six gave excellent account of themselves during World War II, operating from Casablanca to Tokyo. Of these only the Indianapolis was lost, but not until she had delivered the first atomic bomb parts to the Air Forces at Guam.
